چکیده

We present a method for measuring absorption at the 1 x 10(-5) cm(-1) level in high-quality optical materials. Using a Shack-Hartmann wave-front detector, thermal lensing in these materials may be measured. Then, the absorption coefficient may be estimated by fitting the observed deformation to a thermal lensing model based on the temperature dependences of the refractive index and the thermal expansion coefficient. For a particular sample of fused silica, the absorption coefficient was determined to be 1.8 +/- 0.4 x 10(-5) cm(-1). Obtaining this result requires a resolution in the optical path length better than +/- 0.1 nm.

Measurement of wave-front aberration in soft contact lenses by use of a Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor.

Lower- and higher-order wave-front aberrations of soft contact lenses were accurately measured with a Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor. The soft contact lenses were placed in a wet cell filled with lens solution to prevent surface deformation and desiccation during measurements. Aberration measurements of conventional toric and multifocal soft contact lenses and a customized soft contact lens h...

Concept for a laser guide beacon Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor with dynamically steered subapertures.

We describe an innovative implementation of the Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor that is designed to correct the perspective elongation of a laser guide beacon in adaptive optics. Subapertures are defined by the segments of a deformable mirror rather than by a conventional lenslet array. A bias tilt on each segment separates the beacon images on the sensor's detector. One removes the perspectiv...

Laser Ray Tracing versus Hartmann-Shack sensor for measuring optical aberrations in the human eye.

A comparison and validation study of Laser Ray Tracing (LRT) and Hartmann-Shack wave-front-sensor (to be referred to as H-S) methods was carried out on both artificial and human eyes. The aim of this work was double. First, we wanted to verify experimentally the equivalence of single- and double-pass measurements for both H-S and LRT. This interest is due to the impossibility of making single-p...

Shack-Hartmann sensor improvement using optical binning.

We present a design improvement for a recently proposed type of Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor that uses a cylindrical (lenticular) lenslet array. The improved sensor design uses optical binning and requires significantly fewer detector pixels than the corresponding conventional or cylindrical Shack-Hartmann sensor, and so detector readout noise causes less signal degradation. Additionally, de...

Three-dimensional surface profiling and optical characterization of liquid microlens using a Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor.

We demonstrate three-dimensional (3D) surface profiling of the water-oil interface in a tunable liquid microlens using a Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor. The principles and the optical setup for achieving 3D surface measurements are presented and a hydrogel-actuated liquid lens was measured at different focal lengths. The 3D surface profiles are then used to study the optical properties of the...
